Dr. Claire Elder is a newly-appointed Research Associate with Clingendael's Conflict Research Unit. She is a Research Fellow at LSE’s Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa and Lecturer in the Department for International Development at LSE having completed her doctorate in Politics from Oxford University in 2019.

Looking forward after one year

In Early 2020, the ‘Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland’ (VDP) was created on the back of existing self-defense groups in Burkina Faso such as the Koglweogo and Dozo. Upon creation, Burkinabé president Roch Kaboré emphasized that the VDP were to be an inclusive force for each ‘region, ethnicity, political opinion and religious denomination’.

Niger could see its first democratic transition since independence as the country heads to the polls for the presidential election on 27 December. To better understand the perceptions and concerns of Nigériens in the run up to these elections, the Clingendael Institute and Navanti partnered to conduct data collection and analysis throughout all seven regions and the capital district.
