This year, Clingendael Academy conducted various training courses for diplomats, civil servants, humanitarian negotiators, peace negotiators, mediators and other professionals worldwide. Here's a look back at some of the Academy's highlights in 2024.
Training on Environmental Law in Vietnam
Clingendael Academy provided a training programme in Hanoi, Viet Nam, focusing on Environmental Law and Best Practices for Vietnamese officials and university lecturers. One of the training days was held on the Royal Dutch Navy Ship HMNLS Tromp which was docked in Haiphong, Viet Nam. The training aboard the ship provided an inspiring location to discuss environmental law with a specific focus on marine-related challenges.
Enhancing Regional Mediation Support to Peace Processes
With conflicts across the world becoming increasingly complex, support for mediators and mediation processes to effectively contribute to sustainable peace is increasingly important. We welcomed representatives from the AU, ASEAN, COMESA, ECOWAS, EU, IGAD, ICGLR, OAS, OSCE, and SADC to The Hague to strengthen the impact of mediation in conflict resolution.
Successful training completed for diplomats from India
Ten diplomats from India were hosted by the Clingendael Academy in May to participate in a one-week diplomatic training course. The training aimed to sharpen participants diplomatic skills as well as to deepen understanding of the Netherlands foreign policy in general, its priorities, as well as the Netherlands-India bilateral relationship.
Cyber diplomacy training brings together Ethiopian experts
Clingendael Academy conducted a cyber diplomacy training in Addis Ababa in close collaboration with the Ethiopian Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA). A total of 26 participants ranging from Ethiopian attaches, diplomats and civil servants from various ministries gathered to discuss trends and developments in the international cyber domain.
Successful Training of Trainers for Humanitarians Completed in Nairobi
Clingendael Academy welcomed an inspiring group of humanitarians for a five day Training of Trainers (ToT) programme in Nairobi, Kenya. Using several didactical methods, participants were trained in delivering a two-day negotiation training for their own team and relevant stakeholders.
First Edition of the Dutch-Polish Diplomatic Seminar Completed
Clingendael Academy concluded the first edition of the Dutch-Polish Diplomatic Seminar. 20 diplomats – 10 from each country respectively, assembled in the Hague to jointly complete a two-day programme. This seminar was the result of the Utrecht Conference: the annual bilateral consultation between The Netherlands and Poland. It was created to further strengthen the Dutch-Polish relations, enhance the expertise of the participants, and expand their international network.
Dynamic EU Election Debate for Insight into Europe alums
Candidates for the European Parliament from various political parties, including BBB, NSC, GroenLinks-PvdA, CDA, D66, and VVD, debated crucial issues such as migration policy, defence, and agriculture. Just before the European Elections in June, this debate was organised for a large group of alums of the Clingendael course 'Insight into Europe'.

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Smeets attended a pre-deployment training at the Clingendael Academy prior to his mission in the West Bank. The training was indispensable for his work there, he says.
Macedonian defence professionals: 'We use Clingendael's experience to train our own staff'
